Washington State University (WSU), a distinguished and comprehensive public research university with multiple campuses, seeks a thoughtful, highly motivated, experienced and collaborative leader to serve as its inaugural Associate Vice President for Community, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence (AVP). This is an outstanding opportunity for a dynamic and engaging leader to partner across the university and build upon current efforts to foster a more inclusive community, champion underrepresented populations, and extend the values of inclusive excellence and equity across WSU's multiple campuses and beyond.

Founded in 1890 in Pullman, WSU is Washington's land-grant university. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for all citizens – locally, nationally, and globally. WSU is committed to innovation and excellence in research and scholarship. Over 30,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students and approximately 6,500 faculty and staff are located on WSU's five campuses (Pullman, Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, and Everett), online through its Global Campus, in extension offices in each of the state's 39 counties, and regionally based Research and Extension Centers in the state's key agricultural areas. WSU offers 95 academic majors for undergraduates, 78 master's degree programs, and 61 doctoral degree programs, as well as professional degree programs in medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy.

This is an exciting time to join WSU under the strategic and forward-looking leadership of President Kirk Schulz, who came to WSU in June 2016 as the university's 11th President. He is building a strong team of leaders, some new to the university and many who have been here for some time. Together, they are building a true university system, strengthening the individual stature of each of the campuses, while also ensuring that the policies and plans reflect their “one university, geographically dispersed” concept. One of the most recent additions to the team is Vice President for Student Affairs, Mary Jo Gonzales, a highly energetic and accomplished Student Affairs leader who was recently named as one of the 2018 Pillars of the Profession by the NASPA Foundation, a distinguished award for leaders, teachers, and scholars in student affairs and higher education. Shortly after arriving at WSU, President Schulz announced the “Drive to 25” that calls for WSU to become one of the nation's top 25 public research universities, preeminent in research and discovery, teaching, and engagement by 2030. The Division of Student Affairs will play a very significant role in accomplishing that goal, as it touches eight of the eleven metrics, with student success a resounding theme (see https://wsu.edu/drive-to-25/). To best prepare the Division for these endeavors, Vice President Gonzales recently realigned the Division of Student Affairs to be better poised to deliver on the university's commitment to providing a transformational experience to an increasingly diverse student body and serving as a cutting-edge model for student affairs. The AVP for Community, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence will oversee one of the four pillars in the new Student Affairs organization: Community, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence; Student Engagement; Finance and Operations; and the Dean of Students.

Reporting directly to the Vice President (VP), the AVP will be expected to advocate for all students on all campuses and foster an institutional climate across the university that supports and encourages multicultural and global engagement. The AVP will collaborate with a deeply committed student affairs team to optimize student success by better leveraging the many facets of the Division to encourage healthy dialogues and foster an inclusive community that values equity and diversity as hallmarks of its mission. The AVP will oversee a portfolio that includes the Access Center; Equity and Diversity/Diversity Education; Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center Programming; Gender Identity/Expression and Sexual Orientation Resource Center; Multicultural Student Services; Women's Resource Center; and Faculty & Staff Initiatives. Additionally, the AVP, working in collaboration with the VP and the Office of the Provost and Human Resource Services as well as leaders on the other campuses, will assist in the development of faculty and staff initiatives that foster community, equity, and inclusive excellence. The AVP will work with the VP and other student affairs professionals in the Division to help create a more holistic student experience that celebrates and encourages the diversity of WSU.
