Student Access Coordinator

Student Access Coordinator

 

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President/Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Student Access Coordinator works with students, faculty and administrators to improve the accessibility of campus through the delivery of programs and services that promote inclusive design.

 

The Coordinator is responsible for facilitating access to courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities for students with disabilities and works in collaboration to develop and implement best practices in promoting inclusive design, determining and providing reasonable accommodations, and assessing service efficacy.

 

The Coordinator proactively collaborates with partners at the College to remove barriers and foster a welcoming and inclusive environment.

 

Essential Job Duties will include:

  • Meets with students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular and co-curricular environments and determine appropriate accommodations, reviewing additional sources of information as needed
  • Coordinates the provision of access and reasonable accommodations in consultation with students, faculty and staff
  • Provides consultation, information, resources and referral to students with disabilities and faculty, staff and administrators
  • Provides consultation throughout the College on universal design, social construction of disability, and intersections of disability with campus environments
  • Oversees training and technical assistance on technology equipment, coordinates evaluation, acquisition, testing and installation of assistive devices and technology solutions.
  • Maintains appropriate records by documenting communication with and regarding students and recording recommended courses of action or accommodations
  • Participates in environmental access work to improve the design of curricular, information, physical and co-curricular environments
  • Participates in professional development activities through presentation, publications, attendance at conferences and/or related activities
  • Participates in off campus programs.
  • May participate on College committees, task forces, and networks and serve a liaison role with other departments
  • May require weekend and evening hours

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:

  • Work primarily involves sitting for long hours and using office equipment.
  • The incumbent may spend hours on the computer entering data which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
  • Ability to exert up to 10 lbs of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
  • Ability to use a computer to communicate through email and other technological means.
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.  Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly or quickly
  • Ability to move in between buildings separated by brick and gravel paths.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in a human services field such as education, counseling or social work (rehabilitation counseling/psychology/).  An equivalent combination of education and related human services experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of models of disability and inclusive educational design and their application in higher education
  • Knowledge of the application of federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students
  • Knowledge about all categories of disabilities and accommodations in an academic environment 
  • Two years of experience in higher education
  • Thorough understanding of relevant provisions of the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Sections 504 and 508, its amendments and their application to higher education
  • Skill at developing and delivering professional presentations and workshops

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a closely related field
  • Three or more years of experience in Higher Education related to accessibility services, counseling or student academic services
  • Experience, training or skills with technology, including familiarity, understanding or experience with available assistive and/or instructional technologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of typical higher education, campus and community resources
  • Facility with information systems, data management and tools of assessment
