Assoc Prof./Dir. of African American Studies

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care and service, seeks a senior level scholar with experience in or leading programs in African, African American, or Africana Studies, to join the faculty of the African American Studies Program, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, as its next full time Program Director, beginning July, 2018. The African American Studies Program at Saint Louis University has a long history, being founded in 1974 as the Afro American Studies Institute, and later named as an academic program in 1994, initially offering a certificate in African American Studies. Currently, the program offers both a major and a minor, and is seeking transition from a program to a department. As an interdisciplinary program, current faculty hold appointments in the departments of communication, fine and performing arts, history, psychology, English, and political science. The successful candidate will have an exemplary record of scholarship and research (area of specialization open), along with administrative experience, evidence of academic leadership and curricular development, student mentoring and advocacy experience. Until the program finalizes its promotion and tenure criteria, the director position will be tenured in an appropriate disciplinary home within the college, with tenure transferring to African American Studies upon tenure criteria approval. Additional qualifications include: 1) a demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level; 2) record of scholarly achievement sufficient to warrant tenure and rank of at least Associate Professor; 3) experience in teaching first generation college students is also desirable.
