The Position

Under the leadership of the Director of Institutional Research, Analysis and Planning, the Learning Assessment Specialist will work closely with the Office of the Dean of the Faculty to expand the college’s capacity for evidence based assessment activities and strengthen Bates’ institutional assessment initiatives. The Learning Assessment Specialist will work with the faculty, administrators, and academic units to carry out the agenda set by the Dean of the Faculty’s Office on assessment of student learning, evaluation of educational initiatives, and assist faculty in efforts to innovate in teaching and learning. This position will provide expertise to identify assessment needs, develop data collection strategies, and report assessment results in order to support curricular and institutional improvement and promote faculty development in assessment of student learning through workshops and individual consultation.

Qualifications

This role requires a Master’s degree in Higher Education or relevant area and a minimum of five years of professional experience in higher education. A successful candidate for the position must have:

  • Experience and demonstrated expertise related to assessment in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • Quantitative and qualitative research methods.
    • Assessment practices and methods.
    • Accreditation standards.
  • Experience using statistical analysis software tools (preferably SPSS).
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and learning theory.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal and presentation) skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and tasks with attention to detail; demonstrated ability to work productively in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to develop dynamic presentations.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Impeccable organizational (time, task, project management) skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships.  Must be flexible, collaborative and have a positive attitude.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis software and computer applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
