Tenured Position

Georgetown University, Department of African American Studies, Tenured Positon

The Department of African American Studies invites applications for a tenured position at the rank of advanced associate or full professor, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2018. This search builds upon a multi-year hiring initiative and is an integral part of Georgetown University’s plan to expand African American Studies.  We seek colleagues who have an ambitious research agenda, a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, and an earnest desire to help build the newly formed department and to participate in other university service. The successful candidate will complement the strengths of current faculty whose appointments are in African American Studies and faculty whose scholarship supports the mission of the department and hold appointments in other units.  We are particularly interested in applicants whose methodologies incorporate social science and humanistic forms of inquiry, and whose work lies at the intersections of African American Studies and new media, philosophy, or carceral (legal) studies.  Letters of interest should indicate how an applicant’s research projects respond to one of the following questions:

  • Structural and cultural causes of and solutions to black inequality
  • Black cultural productions and responses to legacies and impacts of slavery, Jim Crow segregation, and imperialism in US institutions
  • How Black intersectionality informs equality and social justice

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in African American Studies or related fields by July 1, 2018.  Candidates with administrative and departmental leadership experience and interest are especially welcomed. All applicants should specify the rank for which they are applying in the letter of interest.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, C.V., writing sample (10,000 words or less), research statement (current and future projects, or career narrative), and names, telephone numbers, and email addresses for three referees.

Review of applications will begin on December 14, 2017 and will continue until the positions are filled.  Applications will not be accepted after December 14, 2017.

Applicants should submit applications at http://apply.interfolio.com/47198
