Assistant Professor of Communication Arts


The Division of Mass Communication invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Communication Arts commencing September 1, 2018.

The qualified candidate will be able to teach a range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels including media history, theory, and research. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is a plus: digital media, visual communication, media institutions and systems.

Responsibilities: This is a teaching position with an expectation of ongoing research activities. Division faculty members are also expected to participate in academic advisement, student mentoring, and academic assessment; collaborate with a diverse and interdisciplinary faculty and staff; and engage in other activities as required by the Chair and/or Dean.

Qualifications: A PhD is required in Communication or a closely related field (such as International Relations, Sociology, or Anthropology). An interdisciplinary background is preferred. The ideal candidate will exhibit evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, a record of publications, an active scholarship and research agenda, be experienced in the use of contemporary instructional technologies, and experienced in course and program development. The candidate must be knowledgeable about the rapidly advancing technologies and developments in the field of communication and be able to incorporate them in the curriculum.

Candidates are expected to maintain a 12 credit teaching load per semester with opportunities for research reductions. An active program of research and/or creative projects is expected for tenure. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting our recruiting efforts and student organizations. Demonstrated strategic use of social and digital media is expected.
