Director, Corporate & Foundation Relations

PAY GRADE: 32S

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The University of Delaware (UD) is entering the public phase of a comprehensive campaign. In preparation for this historic initiative, the Office of Development & Alumni Relations (DAR) has built a model fundraising infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the University and support the vision of our UD president, Dennis Assanis. With campaign priorities supporting students and faculty in areas like biopharmaceuticals, public policy, entrepreneurship, and community engagement, UD is forging ahead into a dynamic and enterprising future.

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations will work to establish new partnerships and strengthen existing relationships with the corporate and foundation sector that will result in funding for the immediate and long-term goals of the University. He/she will provide the expertise to advance the University's interests by researching and identifying sources of support by proactively seeking opportunities to generate new proposals based on established guidelines and interests in addition to maintaining strong communication with corporate and foundation donors and prospects. The Director will work closely with deans, faculty and staff to develop knowledge in the areas of academic research and programs and will convey that work to potential funders.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive development plan focused on expanding and enhancing corporate and foundation relationships. Direct and coordinate activities to secure corporate and foundation monetary support for colleges, programs, centers, institutes and other major University initiatives.
  • Manage a portfolio of 75 assigned prospects, resulting in 50 proposals annually of more than $50,000; responsible for soliciting $2 to $3 million and closing $1 to $2 million annually.
  • Identify emerging business leadership and industry trends with a special emphasis on developing high value-exchange corporate and foundation alliances.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across the University to stay informed on research priorities and programs.
  • Maintain a rigorous schedule of 25 visits with corporate and foundation representatives, creating moves management plans related to them, which include strategies of engagement and solicitation of the top corporations that includes presidential and faculty contacts.
  • Accompany college faculty and/or volunteers on cultivation, solicitation or stewardship calls as appropriate, in addition to maintaining own active call schedule.
  • Maintain high quality stewardship process for active corporate and foundation prospects and donors. Work with the Development Office Donor Relations unit to ensure that stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustain successful partnerships by maintaining detailed records of solicitation activities.
  • Work with the University Research Office to advise faculty, administrators, and staff on corporate and foundation areas of interest, cultivation of corporate and foundations special requirements in the development and presentation of proposals.
  • Participate in a prospect management/tracking system, which identifies assigns, rates and tracks major prospects, including corporations and foundations, and the development stage of each.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree, and a minimum of six years successful corporate and/or foundation fundraising experience preferably in higher education at a large research institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Fundraising experience with corporations and foundations, preferably within the context of a capital campaign, resulting in major gifts and grants ($50,000+). Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills with large groups as well as with individuals. Experience with grant and proposal writing at appropriate levels. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Ability to develop strategy as well as solicit prospects. Ability to work as a team member within a complex University.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some domestic travel is required. Evening/weekend work is occasionally required.
