Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist

PAY GRADE: 30E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Cardiovascular Core lab is seeking a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (must be licensed in Delaware) to support several investigations related to diet and cardiovascular health in humans. Under the general direction of Associate Professor Shannon Lennon, the Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist is responsible for developing, coordinating, and counseling subjects on individualized diet plans as well as be responsible for developing and overseeing the preparation of diets for several controlled feeding studies that last from 1 to 4 weeks.

The Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist will work independently to develop the meal plans and make appropriate decisions under limited direction. Familiarity with dietary analysis software is required for assessment of participants dietary intake as well as development of appropriate meal plans. Additional computer skills required to enter and analyze data as well as generate graphs. The Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist will interact with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, research technicians, nurses, exercise physiologists, and administrators across several University departments. This 5 year position is supported by an externally funded grant and continuation is contingent upon the availability of funding.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assess, develop, and create an individualized diet to lower sodium intake.
  • Counsel and follow-up with study participants regularly by performing 24-hour recalls throughout a one month intervention to ensure compliance.
  • Develop several controlled diets including low and high sodium diets, moderate and high potassium diets and high fructose diets. Each diet lasts 7-10 days in length.
  • Purchase and prepare food necessary for controlled diets in conjunction with staff or graduate student.
  • Appropriately discuss, document and maintain sensitive, confidential participant information, including use of medical records; understand and adhere to appropriate ethical standards of professional conduct, confidentiality and privacy.
  • Serve as a resource person in appropriate areas of knowledge, experience and responsibility while exercising considerable independent judgement, resourcefulness and sensitivity.
  • Understand, commit to, and contribute to implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a multicultural environment.
  • Serve as a mentor/preceptor for those undergraduate students who are assisting with the diet preparations.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or other job related discipline and four years experience in a similar clinical nutrition position.
  • Certification as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Licensed to work in the State of Delaware as a RDN.
  • Technical knowledge, specialized training and ability to analyze and assess complex health problems.
  • Experience with counseling and advising adults.
  • Ability to promote teamwork and work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment required.
  • Knowledge and application of comprehensive program planning, principles, quality improvement techniques, and individualized patient counseling/education theories.
  • Effective writing and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational & time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from various sociocultural backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift and transport coolers of food (generally medium weight) and cases of water for study participants.
  • Flexibility to work evenings regularly and weekends periodically, and to adjust work assignments according to the changing needs of the study participants.
