Position Description:
POLITICAL SCIENCE - The Department of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, California, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track academic year Assistant Professor with a specialization in empirical Law and Society to begin September 13, 2018. The successful candidate will have research expertise and the ability to teach courses in our pre-law concentration/Law & Society minor (e.g., judicial politics, judicial process, civil rights and/or constitutional law) as well as our undergraduate research design and/or quantitative methods courses. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work emphasizes issues of justice, diversity and inclusion.

An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Political Science or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, but must provide proof that the doctorate was completed prior to appointment. Preference will be given to candidates whose areas of research and teaching emphasize issues of justice, diversity and inclusion as well as those with demonstrated excellence in university level teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree).

The typical teaching assignment is 12 units (three courses) per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research and service expectations, and with a significant reduction in course load in the first two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Cal Poly is committed to the teacher-scholar model. As teachers, faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogical skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholars, faculty should be engaged in scholarly work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review. As colleagues, it is appropriate for faculty to perform service activities at all levels of the University. Faculty should build collaborative relationships across the University and with colleagues at other universities.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates whose areas of research and teaching emphasize issues of justice, diversity and inclusion as well as those with demonstrated excellence in university level teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree).

Special Conditions:
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
