Assistant Professor of Design/Technical Director

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Design/Technical Director to begin August 2018.  The successful applicant will teach within an interdisciplinary BA in Fine Arts program that includes concentrations in art, drama, and music, along with minors in arts administration, art, and drama in order to prepare students to enter Houston’s vibrant arts industry.

The primary responsibilities of the successful applicant will include managing the construction and installation of scenery, and creation of scenic, lighting, sound, and properties design for departmental productions at the O’Kane Theater. The O’Kane Theater produces two major productions and two smaller productions per year.  The TD supervises student-workers and technical theatre students.  The TD maintains the scene shop tools, equipment, and facilities at the O’Kane Theater.  The teaching load includes Stagecraft, Intro to Theater, Intro to Stage Design, and other classes as needed in the area of technical theatre.

 

The awarding of tenure requires a record of teaching excellence; an established record of continued evidence of significant scholarly/creative development and achievement; and service to the department, the university, and the profession.  Additionally, an ability to work with students of varied, multi-cultural backgrounds who are non-theatre majors, and excellent communication skills are required. The successful candidate will join a newly formed Arts and Communication Department recently designed to accommodate consistent growth in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
