Chancellor

Chancellor
The University of Missouri - Kansas City

The University of Missouri-Kansas City, the largest comprehensive university in the Kansas City metro area and the public urban research university of the University of Missouri System, seeks a Chancellor with the vision, strength, and energy to lead the institution in its mission to engage in vital research and scholarship, effective teaching, and dedicated service.

With an enrollment of over 16,000 students, who come from all 50 states and more than 85 countries, UMKC has earned a national and international reputation for the quality of its faculty and their commitment to cutting-edge research and creative production, active engagement with students, and dedication to community outreach and service. Faculty have received numerous awards, fellowships, and grants, including Fulbright, Guggenheim, Kauffman Foundation, NEH, NEA, and NSF awards, as well as the Pulitzer Prize. Such recognition attests to the high level of scholarship in which the faculty is engaged and to which students have daily contact through small class sizes and a stated mission to engage in research-infused pedagogy.

Located in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, UMKC boasts an alumni/ae network of over 122,000 and partners with over 3,000 local businesses; this level of dedication to enhancing the social, cultural, and economic environments of the metropolitan region has earned UMKC the title "Kansas City's University." UMKC has spearheaded unique educational opportunities, including the only 6-year medical program in the Midwest; the only Conservatory of Music and Dance in Missouri; industry-leading nursing, dental, and pharmacy programs; robust professional programs in health sciences, biological sciences, education, engineering, computer science, business, and law; a unique interdisciplinary Ph.D. program; and acting as host of the Kansas City Repertory Theater within a complex and vibrant college of arts and sciences. These schools and colleges provide students with the region's most diverse pipeline into Kansas City's growing economy and thriving workforce.

The Chancellor of the University of Missouri--Kansas City plays an integral role in enhancing and maintaining the university's mission and operations, while also sustaining and building upon its existing strengths, distinctiveness, and traditions of scholarly and community service. The Chancellor's position is vital to the support and growth of UMKC's mission as an urban-serving research university.

UMKC's next Chancellor must be willing to act as leader of the entire institution: its considerable assets, financial health, alumni/ae, physical campuses, and diverse and numerous disciplines, schools, and programs. The Chancellor reports directly to the President of the University of Missouri System and is expected to lead UMKC in its ambition to become the model for urban research universities, characterized by signature graduate and professional programs, research-infused undergraduate education, highly diverse and engaged faculty, staff, and students, and active collaboration with its city and region. The Chancellor must be an open, transparent communicator and colleague, dedicated to the principles of inclusion and equity, and respectful of all the University's diverse constituencies.

The search committee is co-chaired by Dr. Linda Mitchell, Martha Jane Phillips Starr Missouri Distinguished Professor of Women's and Gender Studies; Professor of History and UMKC Faculty Senate Chair and Terry Dunn, former President and Chief Executive Officer of JE Dunn Construction Group and UMKC alum.
