Art History 144

Date/Time:
Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:15-2:50 PM
Spring 2018 semester

Course Description:
For more than 2000 years, the Silk Road(s) carried more than commercial goods through across Eurasia. It was an instrument of globalization even before the term was invented. This course will explore the Silk Road, both as a 5000-mile network of passageways that facilitated the trading of commodities across different locations of the Eurasian continent, and also as an allegory of the interconnectedness of this continent, which made the transmission and migration of religions, technologies, cultures, and art practices from their local origins to all other regions of the entire continent of Asia and parts of Europe possible. This course will offer an overview of the historical Silk Road and its interconnected cultures through the lens of modern and contemporary artistic practices of Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, India, Iran/Persia, central Asia, the Middle East and the Roman and Byzantine West.

Ph.D. in Art History, at least two years of teaching experience, specialization in Asian and/or non-Western art history.
