Job Description

Associate Vice President for Student Life facilitates a superior student experience through inclusive practices, student engagement in positive and purposeful activities, assessment of programs and services, and effective partnerships within and beyond the university. The Associate Vice President is an educator and seeks opportunities to strengthen student growth and development through teachable moments and student accountability. As the key contact for student issue management and resolution, the AVP is an important member of the University’s emergency management team. The Associate Vice President manages the administration of all policies, programs, services, facilities, and budgets within the Department of Student Life and leads a dynamic staff.

  • Supervision: Is directly or indirectly responsible for recruitment, selection, hiring, onboarding, training, developing, coaching, recognition and performance management of all staff within the areas of Campus Recreation, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Multicultural Student Affairs, Student Government & Organizations, Student Media, Off-Campus Student Services, Parents Programs, and the Russell House University Union.
  • Issue Management and Resolution: Provides issue management and resolution for situations involving student governance, University policies related to student life, Fraternity and Sorority life concerns, student multicultural issues, and student activities and programs. The significance of effective resolution and risk mitigation to the university is considerable and the ability to support a learning environment with education, teachable moments and accountability is essential.
  • Cultivation of Superior Student Experience: Reviews student life programs and services to improve and advance student engagement in meaningful and purposeful activities. Revises programs and services based upon assessment data and national best practices. Ensures that programs and services are contributing to positive student engagement and student success.
  • Cultivation of Diversity and Inclusion: Partners with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to ensure programs, services, and activities support an inclusive student life environment. Supports students’ free speech, right to assembly, and a culture of respect.
  • Student Life Relationship Management: Manages community relations related to student matters on behalf of the University through contact with local neighborhood associations, appropriate state and local agencies, parents, registered religious workers, and news media. Responds to sensitive legislative and media requests in coordination with University Communications.
  • Advisement: Works directly with Student Government officers to advise and inform their plans for proposed initiatives and projects. Must manage the delicate balance of supporting the needs and demands of student leaders within the greater context of the University’s mission, goals and resources.
  • Crisis Management: Serves as an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support and University crisis response and crisis management teams.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate in higher education administration or related field and 10 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education administration.
