Position Description:

Facilities Operations is a department within Facilities Management and Development, a unit of the Administration and Finance Division responsible for managing operations, maintenance, and repair of University facilities. The purpose of the Facilities Operations Department is to provide quality maintenance and minor repair and renovation services that meet or exceed our customers' expectations. This position within the paint shop will provide quality painting, coating, and refinishing services to university facilities.

Under general supervision, the Painter performs journey-level work in the painting, finishing and maintaining of a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures.

The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive:

  • Prepare surfaces for painting and finishing.

  • Apply undercoats and finish coats using the full range of application methods including brush, roll, and spray.

  • Mix and match paints and finishes.

  • Perform power washing.

  • Erect scaffolding and/or hang rigging from electronic staging for painting projects.

  • Paint signs and parking lot/roadway markings.

  • Advise in the selection and storage of paint materials.

  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations as well as inspect related work performed by contractors.

  • Estimate time, cost and materials for painting projects.

  • Participate in the maintenance and operations of a paint shop including the cleaning and maintenance of painting and finishing materials, tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.

  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

  • Maintain records, retrieve data and prepare standard reports related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.

  • Consult with and work with other trades workers.

  • Up to (3) Three positions available.


  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter's apprenticeship program.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire. This position may require the ability to obtain AHERA Supervisor certification for asbestos related work and Cal/OSHA Lead training as well as the ability to wear respiratory protection.


    Required Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting, finishing, and drywall.
  • Thorough knowledge of the applicable state codes and regulations, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.
  • Ability to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately, mix paints and finishes, and match colors.
  • Ability to erect and work from scaffolds, rigging and ladders.
  • Ability to select the most appropriate materials for the job.
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawing and specifications, make rough sketches, and estimate the cost, time and materials of painting work.
  • Ability to maintain records, retrieve data and prepare standard reports using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations at a level appropriate for the position.
  • Ability to interact and communicate in an effective manner, as well as, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism in entering occupied areas including student residential halls, faculty and staff offices and other university space.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Experience using lifts and booms to perform painting tasks.

  • Special Conditions:

  • Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as paint thinners, lead and asbestos.
  • Ability to work on and climb ladders/stairs, work in confined and high spaces, carry up to 50 lbs., and squat, kneel and crawl.
  • Ability to manipulate parts and tools of the painting trade.
  • Ability to distinguish color and depth.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Non-exempt" and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    This position may require the ability to obtain AHERA Contractor/Supervisor certification for Asbestos Related Work with annual refresher training and Cal/OSHA Lead in Construction training with annual retraining, as well as, the ability to wear respiratory protection appropriate for the hazard encountered. A Cal/OSHA mandated medical evaluation is required prior to the use of a respirator.

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
