Postdoctoral Research Associate, Physics

Summary: The Postdoctoral Research Associate, in Computational Electronic Structure Theory, focuses on improving the description of van der Waals forces in density functional theory. A new van der Waals including density functional will be developed by analyzing and combining two different design philosophies within non-local density functional theory. This is a 2.5-year postdoctoral position in the Materials Simulation Group (http://thonhauser.physics.wfu.edu) funded by the US National Science Foundation and is offered as a one-year contract, renewable for one year and possibly longer, pending NSF approval.

Essential Functions:
  • Derives mathematical framework for non-local density functional.
  • Programs the developed framework into PWscf.
  • Designs and conducts computational research projects.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of research.
  • Collects and analyzes data.
  • Effectively communicates results.
  • Writes and publishes papers.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • PhD degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field.
  • Experience and thorough understanding of density functional theory and modern electronic-structure theory.
  • Extensive experience with PWscf and/or VASP, programming in FORTRAN, and advanced mathematical skills.
  • High proficiency with UNIX/LINUX.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing).
  • Ability to work individually or collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to provide a research environment that is conducive to learning.
