Assistant Professor of Physics

Title
Assistant Professor of Physics
Posting Number
F00087JP
Department
Physics and Astronomy
Position Summary

Bowdoin College's Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment in Astrophysics, with a preference for candidates in Observational Cosmology, at the Assistant Professor level beginning fall 2018. Candidates having experience with physical instrumentation and/or detectors are strongly encouraged to apply. We seek candidates who can maintain an active research program that involves well-prepared undergraduates, a program where thought has been given to how the candidate will connect their research with others in astrophysics and physics in general. The candidate will also complement a current faculty member with expertise in Numerical General Relativity and help expand our offerings in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The ability to teach appropriate undergraduate physics classes is also a priority.

We welcome applications from candidates committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population and those who will enrich and contribute to the College's ethnic and cultural diversity. We value a community in which students of all backgrounds are warmly welcomed and encouraged to succeed. In your application materials, we ask that you to address how your teaching, scholarship, and/or mentorship may support our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Bowdoin values a strong commitment to research and a promise of long-term successful scholarly engagement as well as a dedication to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment. This is an expansion position, and as part of the expansion of courses in Astronomy the successful candidate should be interested in establishing an observational component using modern portable telescopes in a facility the candidate would help design. The Department is well-funded, with a modern machine shop staffed by machinists, a class 1000 clean room, and a variety of resources that will be available to the candidate. There is internal funding in support of research, a junior sabbatical leave, and a post-tenure sabbatical. Teaching load is two courses each semester. A Ph.D. in Physics is expected by date of appointment. We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve considerations of spouses and domestic partners. To that end, where possible, the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of spouses and partners of members of the faculty.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit: 1) a cover letter that details your scholarly research agenda and describes your teaching experience; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement on teaching philosophy and interests, potential Honors Projects in which you might involve students, and a discussion of the ways in which you would plan to connect your research with others in astrophysics and physics in general; and 4) the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin October 15, 2017.
