Job Summary: The Assistant Director Religious and Spiritual Life is responsible for oversight of Robert Carr Chapel and its related campus and community events including, but not limited to: classes, concerts, speakers, rehearsals, worship, weddings, and departmental & university programs. This includes oversight of the facility schedule, staffing, operations, finances and communications. It also includes serving as an on-site staff for weekend events. Additionally, this position is a member of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life department and provides support through administrative projects such as producing budget reports, staff trainings and communications assistance as appropriate. The newly renovated chapel welcomes over 20,000 individuals annually and in host to over 400 events each year.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Oversees program and facility schedule by maintaining a calendar of chapel programs and events annually and schedules campus and community events.

Serves as in-office liaison for scheduled weddings and other events; providing information regarding facility, guidelines and options; relating with vendors and community partners conducting tours as needed; managing related booking paperwork, facility staffing, contracts and database; preparing and distributing monthly calendar.

Oversees the Robert Chapel facility including the oversight of ongoing maintenance, inventory and repair and improvement schedules; oversees work with support staff and outside contractors addressing the detailed technical needs of chapel audiovisual systems, organ maintenance and other related technologies.

Oversees over a dozen part-time and student facility staff by hiring, supervising and apprising chapel staff including sound technicians, musicians, interns and other temporary, contract and student staff.

Meets financial objectives and manages finances by setting and monitoring budgets, gathering and reporting expense and revenue information connected with facility usage; facilitating and monitoring invoices, contracts and purchase orders and reconciling income and expenditures.

Manages chapel including day-to-day execution of social media; facilitating campus and community visibility, writing and distributing communications and press releases and for programs and events.

Serves as on-site chapel staff for approximately 30% to 40% of weddings annually through presence at rehearsals, weddings and related set-up, ensuring rules and guidelines are followed, supervising related staff, assisting with the flow of the service as appropriate and requested.

Assists with overall RSL departmental operations including, but not limited to budget analysis, staff training and administration, event support and communications.

Participates in staff meetings, committees and initiatives; and supporting departmental programs.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors' degree or equivalent in experience.
  • 2 years' in higher education administration, event planning and/or management.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques.
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and record keeping techniques
  • Knowledge of training and supervising staff.
  • Knowledge of basic research techniques.
  • Knowledge of organizing and problem-solving techniques.
  • Skill in the navigation of Microsoft Windows.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.

  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
