The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Undergraduate Education, from candidates internal to the University of California system and others with significant University of California experience.

UC San Diego, established in 1960 as part of the 10-campus University of California, has rapidly achieved status as one of the top institutions in the U.S. for higher education and research. UC San Diego is ranked fifth in the nation in federal research and development expenditures, with annual research funding of approximately $1 billion over the last six years. The U.S. News and World Report 2017 Best Colleges Guidebook ranks UC San Diego as the tenth-best public university in the nation. According to the 2010 National Research Council rankings, 60 percent of UC San Diego's rated graduate programs are among the top 20 programs in their fields nationwide, and the University's Ph.D. programs were ranked highly in every academic division. For seven consecutive years, UC San Diego has been ranked the top public university in the nation by Washington Monthly based on the positive impact the university has had on the country in terms on enabling social mobility, research productivity and civic engagement.

UC San Diego currently enrolls a diverse student body of over 35,000 students including 28,127 undergraduates and 7,689 graduate, medical, and pharmaceutical students. The University received 88,451 freshman applications for 2017 and admitted freshman for fall 2017 had an average high school GPA of 4.12. Approximately sixty percent of UC San Diego undergraduate students receive need-based financial aid. With over 140 undergraduate major programs, countless co-curricular opportunities, and over 500 student organizations, UC San Diego is preparing the next generation of global leaders, channeling their passions into driving innovation, fueling economic growth and making the world a better place.

UC San Diego is unique among the UC campuses in offering undergraduates the small college concept patterned after those at Cambridge and Oxford universities. The Colleges are residential neighborhoods on campus with their own residence facilities, staff, traditions and general education requirements - offering undergraduates the benefit of a large research university while providing the comfort of a small college identity. Every UC San Diego undergraduate is assigned to one of six colleges upon admission. College assignments are not based on major thus undergraduates may select from the full complement of available majors across UC San Diego regardless of College affiliation.

The Position:

The Dean of Undergraduate Education reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and is responsible for providing academic leadership in the development, enhancement, and delivery of undergraduate academic programsincluding new interdisciplinary programs across colleges, divisions, schools, and disciplines. The Dean promotes curriculum innovation and reform and strengthens academic support services for undergraduate students. He/she serves as the campus Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) and leads the campus through reaffirmation of accreditation reviews. The Dean serves as the undergraduate liaison with the Academic Senate's Education Policy Committee, Undergraduate Council, and other committees to promote academic excellence by assessing existing academic programs and services and initiating new ones and advising on implications of academic policy changes. The Dean oversees an internal staff, the Office for Students with Disabilities, Summer Session, Academic Integrity Office, and the operation of the six undergraduate colleges, including supervision of the College Provosts and decanal reviewer and/or approver of academic appointments associated with the College Writing Programs and College Core Courses. The Dean works collaboratively to resolve Student Code of Conduct, staff human resources, financial and other issues that may arise in the colleges.

Skills and Qualifications:

The Dean should possess the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • A distinguished record in teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with the expectations of a tenured appointment in one of UC San Diego's academic departments. (ladder-rank or LSOE series)
  • A strong commitment and vision for the future of undergraduate education that uses existing resources to their best advantage and takes the campus in needed new directions.
  • Demonstrated leadership in fostering academic excellence, in developing undergraduate education, and in cultivating a student-centered culture.
  • Experience in managing operations, staff, and academic appointees.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills; demonstrated success in collaborating with faculty, university administrators, students and staff;
  • A commitment to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion among the university's faculty, staff and student body.
  • An ability to interpret statistical analyses and extensive report writing skills.
