Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Director of Advocacy and Engagement will oversee the strategy and team to enlist alumni, parents, students and friends to be ambassadors for the University. These ambassadors will communicate positive messages about the University of Maryland with their personal, professional and civic networks. The goal is to grow the University's brand and positive perception with the public at large, and also to provide a meaningful volunteer engagement opportunity for alumni, parents, and students.

The Director will manage a legislative advocacy network for the Alumni Association and the University. The goal of the network is to help advance the legislative agenda of the University of Maryland, as well as ensure that elected and appointed officials know the value of the University to the state, nation, and world. The Director will work with staff in the President's office, Governmental Relations, and Strategic Communications. In addition, this person will work with high-level administrators at the campus' colleges, schools, departments and units, and also with the Board of Governors and the Foundation Trustees. Additionally, the Director will create and staff the Association's Advocacy Committee as part of the Board of Governors.

The Director will also create a strategy to engage alumni and parents of current students in the admissions recruitment and yield process. These volunteers will help spread positive messages to prospective students and families to drive applications and enrollment in the university. Additionally, the Director will develop a plan to engage legacy families with the university. This includes events, communications, and programs with a goal of raising support among multigenerational Terp families and enlisting them as ambassadors for the university.

The Director must have the ability to travel and to attend evening and weekend events and programs (15%).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor's degree required.

Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of experience in alumni or volunteer relations, or related experience.
Experience training and managing staff and/or volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to think creatively and strategically in order to launch a new initiative.
Ability to work collaboratively, multi-task, think strategically to both set and achieve goals.
Ability to assess, recommend and implement programming and operations based on strategic planning goals.
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferences:

Master's degree.
Experience staffing boards and/or committees.
Experience working in the state or federal legislature, on a political campaign, or in the public policy arena. Knowledge of higher education and/or alumni relations.
Background and experience in planning events.
