Research Assistant I


Position Summary
The successful candidate will participate in and help oversee a research program in ovarian biology. The candidate will manage and supervise laboratory operation including ordering supplies, maintaining and validating equipment, training and supervising student employees, and tracking laboratory expenditures. Candidate will adhere to policies of regulatory compliance and good laboratory practices. Candidate will be responsible for handling of and sampling from farm animals, collecting tissue samples from slaughterhouse and executing various histological, cellular and molecular biology assays. Responsibilities of this position also include assay validation, adherence to SOPs, quality control of data, data analysis, data security, and documentation of study results. Candidate will assist with design and production of power point presentations, editing grant applications and manuscripts, and other reporting activities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Depending on experiment demand, candidate will be occasionally required to work irregular hours. This is a one-year, term-limited position, with end date 12 months from date of hire, and possible renewal dependent upon satisfaction of performance and renewal of funding.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Biological Sciences or related field; one to three years of experience in a research setting; experience in laboratory management; experience with cell/tissue culture techniques, molecular assays (DNA/RNA/protein isolation, qPCR, western blot), general histological techniques, and immunohistochemistry; experience in working with farm animals and collecting/dissecting tissue samples from slaughterhouse; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications
M.S. degree in Biological Sciences or related field and knowledge in re productive biology and endocrinology; experience in laboratory management, animal and laboratory compliance and safety; experience in hormone assays (radioimmunoassay and ELISA); experience in molecular biology including nucleic acid and protein detection and quantitation; experience in sectioning plastic blocks using ultramicrotome and histological and morphometric analysis; experience with handling of and sampling from farm animals (cows); excellent collaboration skills. Good interpersonal skills and working well with others.
