Protection Officer, Part-time (Temporary opportunity)

Summary: Provides protection to Reynolda House Museum of American Art from criminal activity, fire, and safety hazards. Monitors activities within the museum, conducts roving patrols, and responds to incidents as directed. Responsibilities involve dynamic interpersonal interaction with Reynolda House visitors, staff, and vendors during normal museum hours as well as special functions and after hours and weekend events.

Essential Functions:
  • Maintains knowledge of current policies, procedures, and security system operations in order to correctly implement judgment and actions for protection of collection and the safety and protection of Museum staff and visitors.
  • Observes collection for change of any kind, reports problems to supervisor for immediate notification, and reports any building conditions requiring immediate attention to the Senior Protection Officer.
  • Keeps the collection safe and secure by preventing unauthorized persons from touching, handling, defacing, or otherwise tampering with the collection.
  • Regulates and controls traffic through the galleries, ensures the smooth operation of special events, previews, and receptions.
  • Provides protection for the museum and the premises from criminal activity, fire, and safety hazards in the public and non-public spaces during operational hours, special events, and holidays.
  • Assists in the evacuation of the museum in the event of an emergency that threatens life or property in accordance with current emergency procedures, ensure security of the area until authorities can arrive on the scene, coordinates and provides basic first aid and CPR in cases of accident or illness, and directs calls for emergency medical assistance.
  • Monitors activities in the museum to ensure the safety and security of the collection.
  • Enforces all museum policies and procedures equally and without bias.
  • Promptly reports all incidents, emergencies, suspicious activity, safety, or fire hazards.
  • Provides excellent customer service to guests, clients, and staff while helping to ensure their safety and enjoyment while visiting the museum.
  • Responds appropriately to guest conflicts.
  • Assists with orientation of visitors as needed and responds to their queries about the collection and historic site as well as museum programs and exhibitions and membership, without leaving any assigned post unattended.
  • Observes and assists visitors, corrects or reports problems as appropriate.
  • Prepares detailed incident reports for all emergencies or serious incidents.
  • Responds to, reports, investigates, and documents security incidents.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • High School diploma plus specialized training with one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to understand and follow policies and make logical decisions.
  • Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills (verbal and written) through listening, questioning, and speaking (knowledge of second language helpful).
  • Working knowledge of Reynolda's history, architecture, art collections, and the decorative arts. Commitment to learning is essential (training available).
  • Working knowledge of basic computer functions.
  • Ability to demonstrate dynamic customer service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using two-way radio.
  • Ability to successfully complete in house security training.
  • Ability to successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to operate an elevator as needed.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • College degree with background in education, history, art history, literature, or communication.
