The University of California, San Diego, Department of Surgery (https://healthsciences.ucsd.edu/som/surgery/) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body is excited to announce a search to fill the position of Associate or Full Professor (Ladder Rank Series) and Vice-Chair for Research.

The successful candidate will coordinate research programs across the Department including the recruitment and development of academic faculty, the building of cross-disciplinary research programs, the development of research training grant infrastructure, and oversight of the departmental resources that relate to clinical, basic, and translational research.

The position is open to both clinician-scientists and non-clinician scientists. If filled by the former, clinical efforts will be generally limited to 25% FTE.

The successful candidate must be nationally recognized in their field and have an active track record of independent research funding. Experience in leading a large research group and/or departmental research program is required. The successful candidate will embrace these values as well and demonstrate an ability to navigate the inherent multidisciplinary research landscape in a collaborative manner.

Qualified candidates must meet the following criteria:

1. MD and/or PhD degree
2. If clinician-scientist, must be board-certified in their specialty and
3. Must have or be able to secure a California medical license
4. Independently funded
5. Have experience in the surgical research environment

Appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor rank. Series will include 50% Ladder Rank and 50% In-Residence with qualified candidates with secured extramural funding. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
