INTERNAL SEARCH

The University of Delaware seeks internal applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. We seek an innovative and dynamic leader with a vision to advance the Department's research and teaching, and its international reputation and visibility.

The Department offers an undergraduate BA in sociology, a multidisciplinary BA in criminal justice, and an MA and PhD in both sociology and criminology. The Department includes the Center for Drug and Health Studies and is affiliated with the Disaster Research Center, two internationally acclaimed research centers. Extramural research support in the Department is among the highest in the College of Arts and Sciences, with faculty pursuing very active and productive research programs.

The Department is especially strong in the areas of crime/law/deviance, gender/race/inequality, health and health services, and disaster/environment studies. Faculty have strengths in both qualitative and quantitative research design and methodologies. The Department currently includes 25 full-time faculty members, about 633 undergraduate majors in sociology and criminal justice and 39 students in the graduate program. The Department seeks a Chair with a demonstrated capacity for leadership within a democratically organized department, as well as a strong record of scholarship and teaching. The individual should be capable of promoting multidisciplinary links with other academic units as well as professional organizations, and of enhancing the Department's fundraising efforts.

Applicant must be a tenured full professor at UD, with a distinguished record of scholarship; a record of seeking and obtaining external funding; a commitment to excellence in instruction at all levels; and sufficient experience to indicate the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with faculty, professional staff, and the administration. The committee seeks applicants with backgrounds in Sociology, Criminology, Criminal Justice or other complementary areas; however, there is no disciplinary requirement to apply. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate, in writing and orally, their commitment to diversity, including the mentoring and retention of a diverse faculty and student body, and to building and furthering ties with other units across the University, to industry and beyond and building on the mission of the Department.
