Limited Term Researcher

CONTEXT OF JOB:

Major responsibilities include maintaining the UD teaching apiary and pollinator gardens for honey production, teaching and workshops for the beekeeping community within the Mid-Atlantic region. The successful applicant will also be an integral part of developing an additional teaching apiary in southern Delaware with the aims of producing nucleus hives and queen honey bees. Another facet of this position is running a molecular lab/microscopy lab for genetic identification of feral honey bee samples and pollen identification. The research associate will oversee the apiary management, honey extraction and hive maintenance under the direction of faculty supervision (Dr. Deborah Delaney). The research associate will be responsible for advertising, hiring, and training undergraduate, graduate students and interns associated with the apiculture program at UD.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinates the field season for any research and workshops at UD teaching apiary.
  • Manages the honey bees in the apiary for honey production, based on best management practices and maintains hive equipment.
  • Helps to establish a new apiary for nuc and queen production. Oversees honey extraction, bottling and selling.
  • Maintains hard copy records of each colony within the apiary and enters data into database for long-term data management
  • Helps to maintain and expand the pollinator garden at the UD teaching apiary.
  • Co-supervises all student and summer labor associated with the apiary.
  • Orders supplies and maintains inventory of field equipment
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years' experience working with honey bees in the field. Should have background with molecular protocols and DNA extraction. Must have demonstrated skills in data management and organization using spreadsheets and databases as well as some familiarity with summarizing data using statistical software. Must have leadership skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
