The University of Delaware Library seeks an innovative, service-oriented leader. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Libraries and Museums, this position directs the Library's programs, policy, and outreach in the areas of publishing, scholarly communication, and open access. In addition, the position provides leadership in developing digital scholarship, research data curation and services and other emerging forms of scholarship in a rapidly evolving research landscape. The University of Delaware Press is an important part of the Scholarly Publishing and Research program.

Major responsibilities include:
  • Provide leadership for the design, development, management and support of current and emerging, library-based digital initiatives. Work collaboratively with library staff, university faculty and staff, campus Information Technologies, as well as external national vendors and library partners. Establish criteria of excellence and effectiveness for all aspects of the Library's digital initiatives.
  • Provide campus-wide leadership and serve as primary spokesperson for the Library's digital strategies and services to faculty, staff, students, and other library users. Advance development of digital humanities initiatives and open access on campus.
  • Provide strategic direction for Scholarly Publishing and Research division, administer divisional budget and human resources, including 5 exempt and 5 nonexempt positions, as well as 12-15 student assistants:
  • Serve as member of the Library Executive Council, the senior management group responsible for library-wide planning, policy-making, budget and resource allocation, faculty and student relations, and the implementation and evaluation of programmatic activities. Participate in strategic planning and problem solving.
  • Represent the University of Delaware Library in scholarly publishing and digital initiatives within the University and at related regional and national meetings.


Qualifications: Master degree from an ALA-accredited graduate school, or a relevant advanced degree and work experience (preferably in an academic or research library) that is likely to predict success in this position. Experience building scholarly communications and publishing programs in academic institutions. Awareness of current trends and best practices in scholarly communication, publishing and research in higher education. Commitment to Open Access. Strong technology aptitude with substantial experience designing and/or managing library systems (such as digital rights management systems, institutional repositories, and digitization services). Record of successful technology program leadership including evidence of innovative approaches to projects and services. A broad view of issues in libraries and higher-education and a flexible approach to problem-solving. Demonstrated analytic, quantitative, planning and organizational skills. Excellent communication skills with public speaking experience. Effective interpersonal skills with proven record of fostering productive collaborations among individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds. Experience supervising, developing, and mentoring scholarly communication professionals. Evidence of continuing participation in professional and scholarly activities.
