PBX Operator

Job Title: PBX Operator Job Number: 2017-047 Department: Marketing and Communication - 25001 Job Description:
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt / Temporary

Salary: $10.00 per hour

Job Summary: The PBX Operator is responsible for facilitating communications by operating the telecommunications systems for the university.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Helps internal and external individuals and organizations who have business with the university by transferring telephone calls to requested individuals; placing long distance and conference calls. Provides general information to telecommunications system users by answering questions and instructing requester with operational information. Resolves telecommunications problems by monitoring equipment; responding to emergency phone calls; recording complaints; calling repair services. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic telephone etiquette, equipment and operations.
  • Skill in some or all components of Microsoft Office.
  • Skill in Microsoft Windows navigation.
  • Skill in basic keyboarding techniques.
  • Skill in basic record keeping techniques.
  • Ability to accurately retain numbers.


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.


Work Environment:
  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
