Dean, School of Natural Sciences

The University of California, Merced (UC Merced) is the newest campus in the University of California system. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, the campus seeks to hire an imaginative and collaborative leader as its Dean for the School of Natural Sciences as it enters an exciting new era of growth and transformation.

UC Merced was conceived both to serve the needs of the rapidly growing Central Valley, one of the world's most productive agricultural regions, and to increase access to the University of California system (UC system) for California's top achievers. UC Merced is the most ethnically diverse campus in the UC system and has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education. Seventy-one percent of the undergraduates are first-generation college students, with sixty-one percent Pell Grant eligible. In just its 12th academic year, UC Merced has been designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as an “R2” institution, a “doctoral-granting university with higher research activity”. Since welcoming its first freshman class in 2005, UC Merced has grown in enrollment to over 7,300 students, including more than 520 graduate students in its three Schools: School of Engineering (SoE), School of Natural Sciences (SNS), and the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA). Through its innovative 2020 Project, the campus is expected to grow to 10,000 students over the next few years; and as many as 25,000 students within two decades. The growth to 10,000 students will involve the hiring of 150 new faculty by 2022.

The School of Natural Sciences (SNS) will be an integral part of the future and growth of UC Merced. With STEM fields becoming increasingly important in today's world, SNS looks to find new solutions to help society solve important problems in energy, the environment, sustainability, and health. This will require novel and creative approaches that rely on interdisciplinary and diverse teams of scientists. SNS highly values curricular innovations both in degree programs and in foundational courses, and it is committed to innovative teaching concepts that increase the recruitment and retention of its students. Faculty members have had the unique opportunity to create and shape curricular programs and offerings to provide both the scientific breadth and the depth required for graduates in the 21st century.

Working with faculty, students, and staff, as well as with leaders from the UC system and the regional and national community, the SNS Dean will be asked to address a set of key opportunities and challenges. Partnering closely with the faculty and the campus leadership, the Dean will:

  • Advance the mission and responsibilities of a rapidly growing research university serving one of the most diverse student populations in the country.
  • Develop a shared vision for the School for the next phase of growth.
  • Advance the scholarly impact of the School of Natural Sciences.
  • Support and advance strategies for student success.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the School of Natural Sciences internally and externally.
