Position Summary

The Bowdoin College Department of Religion is pleased to accept applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship beginning July 1, 2017. The possibility of extension of this appointment for an additional year will be reviewed later in the fall semester 2017. The successful candidate will be able to offer courses on Hindu and Buddhist traditions as well as methodological and comparative courses such as Introduction to the Study of Religion ( REL 1101). The fellow will be expected to teach three courses over the course of the year and participate in the life of the department. The position's home is in the Religion Department, but courses could be cross-listed with the Asian Studies Program. Both the Religion Department and the Asian Studies Program value a commitment to outstanding teaching and strong research grounded in the languages and cultures of South and/or Southeast Asia. Applicants must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research, and a commitment to the liberal arts, which includes a non-confessional approach to the instruction of religion.
Applicants for this fellowship must have completed their Ph.D. no earlier than January 1, 2014. Candidates who expect to receive their Ph.D. by July 1, 2017 should provide documentation from their home institution confirming this schedule. Applicants must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research, and a commitment to the liberal arts.
The fellowship carries a salary of $50,000 plus benefits. In addition, the position carries a $4,000 research and travel fund plus support to attend professional conferences.
