Position Summary

Bowdoin College invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Director and Lecturer, Quantitative Reasoning (QR) Program beginning July 2017, with teaching responsibilities as a Lecturer in QR. The initial appointment is for three years. Reporting to the Director of the QR Program, the Assistant/Associate Director will be responsible for providing support of the College's teaching and learning initiatives related to quantitative reasoning and support ongoing efforts to foster quantitative literacy across the curriculum.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching and show a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education. We are particularly interested in candidates who are committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population and who will enrich and contribute to the ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity of the College.

The teaching expectation is up to 5 courses per year, including an introductory course in QR MATH 1050: Quantitative Reasoning and the possibility of developing new courses in the candidate's specialty related to QR. In addition, the Assistant/Associate Director will assist the Director of the QR Program in training and oversight of the student Q-tutors.

The QR Program serves the campus as part of the Center for Learning and Teaching ( CLT ), which also comprises programmatic emphases on writing and rhetoric, academic study skills, and English for multi-lingual speakers. Q-tutors provide drop-in and individual tutoring in quantitative courses from multiple disciplines (mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, chemistry and biology), as well as leading study groups for such courses.

This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position; salary is commensurate with credentials and experience. The successful candidate will possess:
• Demonstrated success teaching introductory quantitative-oriented courses (experience instructing statistics is preferred).
• Professional experience reflecting accomplishments supporting learning and teaching in a higher education environment.
• Knowledge of and facility with the scholarship on teaching and learning.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty and staff.
• PhD in relevant field expected at the time of appointment.
