Academic Coordinator, TRIO McNair Scholars Program

The mission of the TRIO McNair Scholars program is to inspire and empower first generation students with financial need and underrepresented students of color to succeed in doctoral study and advanced careers through an equitable and inclusive community engaged in research, scholarship, and comprehensive personal development at the undergraduate level. Toward this end, the Academic Coordinator oversees seminars and other educational activities, provides academic counseling, and coordinates academic support for participants in the TRIO McNair Scholars program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee educational seminars focused on preparing students for doctoral study. This includes planning, coordinating, and facilitating seminars for participants via classroom-based and online-based formats, often in collaboration with faculty.
- Oversee other educational activities. This includes planning, coordinating, and facilitating peer mentoring, cultural enrichment, graduate school visits, and academic conferences for participants.
- Provide academic counseling, coaching, and advocacy for participants. This includes assessment of academic needs, creation of a student action plan, monitoring of academic growth, and appropriate referrals to additional services.
- Assist participants in securing admission to, and financial assistance for, enrollment in graduate programs.
- Assist participants in securing and completing a summer research internship under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
- Assist participants with financial and economic literacy, including financial planning for post-secondary education.
- Coordinate academic support, including tutoring services.
- Assist the McNair Director with administrative operations, including strategic planning, outreach, selection of participants, recordkeeping, reporting, and compliance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree AND two (2) years of professional experience in an academic support program; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

- Student development theories, advising theories, campus policies, and academic catalog.
- Student learning theory, including pedagogy.
- Fundamentals of undergraduate research and other scholarly activities.
- Graduate school admissions processes, funding opportunities, and success strategies.
- Socioeconomic and cultural aspects of served populations.
- Inclusive excellence and intercultural competence.
- The use of specified computer applications involving data processing, records maintenance, word processing, online applications, and educational technology including learning management systems.
- Best practices in professional business communication including business letter writing and the standard format for typed materials.

SKILL IN

- Planning, coordinating, and facilitating educational seminars, other educational activities, and academic support.
- Facilitating participant travel to graduate school visits and academic conferences. 
- Providing culturally-competent academic counseling and holistic coaching. 
- Assessing the needs of participants and monitoring their academic growth. 
- Establishing effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team goals and objectives including open and authentic communication with team members. 
- Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, paying attention to detail, and following through on assignments with a minimum of direction.
- Using tact, discretion, and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Operating standard office equipment and educational technology.
