Working Hours: One full-time, tenure-track Mental Health Counselor position, beginning in July 2017, assigned to work with the student population in Student Health Services, under the direction of the Dean of Student Life and Judicial Affairs. Annual on-duty days will be 195, spread over 12 months. Salary placement will be on the full-time faculty salary schedule, plus a 1.108 time factor (reflecting the number of days beyond the standard 176-day faculty contract). The individual selected for this position may be assigned to any district facility during any hours of operation including evenings and weekends. The standard contractual work week for counselors is forty (40) hours, including twenty-five (25) contact hours, ten (10) preparation hours, and five (5) institutional service hours. The twenty-five (25) contact hours is defined to include any counseling activity in which counseling service is provided to a student or students, including instruction, workshops, individual or group counseling. The ten (10) preparation hours include course work preparation and counseling preparation (of which 5 hours must be on campus). The expectation is that thirty (30) hours will be on campus.

Basic Function and Other Details:
STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
Student Health Services assists students with their physical and mental health needs so they may accomplish academic success. Services and programs focus on medical care provided by registered nurses and a nurse practitioner. Mental health therapists provide individual, couples and family counseling. The mandated Health Fee supports these services and helps fund Student Accident Insurance.

Representative Duties:
(E = essential job function)

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Plan, organize, and implement the delivery of psychological services for students in support of student academic success and retention, including intake assessment, case management, and crisis intervention. (E)

2. Collaborate with staff from Student Health Services, the college, and community service agencies in developing, implementing and evaluating educational and outreach activities on the prevention, recognition and treatment of psychological and behavioral problems, which may include anger management, substance abuse, harm reduction, relationship skills development, suicide prevention, and early intervention for onset of an acute major mental health illness. (E)

3. Serve as a consultant to faculty, staff, and administration regarding students with behavioral or mental health concerns, and/or related mental health issues and concerns to the college community; essential member of the District's Behavioral Intervention Team and Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation Team (CARE). (E)

4. Coordinate and supervise a mental health internship program, including intern hiring, training, individual and group supervision, case management, and liaison work with graduate program staff. (E)

5. Provide confidential mental health counseling; refer students to physicians, clinics, agencies and other health care providers; report suspected abuse, molestation and neglect to proper law enforcement agencies in accordance with legal requirements. (E)

6. Connect students with community resources as needed. (E)

7. Maintain confidential mental health treatment records. (E)

8. Prepare reports of mental health services activities, utilization statistics, outcome measures, and other reports as needed. (E)

9. Serve as a liaison to the college with community mental health services and agencies. Participate as a member of the San Diego Suicide Prevention Council (SDSPC) and the SDSPC Colleges and University subcommittee.

10. In collaboration with the Director of Health Services, actively participate in the Program Review Planning Process, Student Learning Outcomes assessments, student mental health needs assessments, development of program outcome measures, and other quality improvement projects as assigned.

11. Develop, coordinate and supervise mental health contracts and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).

12. Provide professional development training; distribute resources to staff and faculty.

To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

1a. a Master's degree in counseling, career development, educational counseling, guidance counseling, counseling psychology, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR

1b. a Master's degree in Education, Concentration: Counseling; Education: Counseling Option; Education: Counseling and Guidance Concentration; Education: Educational and Clinical Counseling; Education: Educational Counseling; Education: School Counseling; (approved comparable degree majors at MiraCosta College); OR

1c. a Bachelor's degree in any of the above majors AND a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license valid in California; OR

1d. a valid California Community College Counselor credential; OR

1e. the equivalent; applicants applying under the "equivalent" provision must attach an equivalency statement and supporting documentation at time of application. Guidelines may be found at http://www.miracosta.edu/administrative/hr/downloads/Equivalency.pdf;

AND

2. possession of current and valid licensure as one of the following for at least two years prior to the start of this position (July 2017):
a. California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT);
b. California Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW);
c. California Licensed Psychologist;

AND

3. have practiced psychotherapy or directly supervised trainees, interns, or associate clinical social workers who perform psychotherapy as part of their clinical practice in two of the past five years immediately preceding the start of this position;

AND

4. except for California Licensed Psychologists, complete a six-hour supervision training (required to provide supervision to MFT interns or trainees) within the two-year period immediately preceding the start of this position and every renewal period when supervising; this requirement can be completed within 60 days of starting this position if you have never taken this course;

AND
5. sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

All degrees and units used to satisfy the minimum qualifications must be from postsecondary institutions accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. Desirable Qualifications:
The college seeks candidates who have achieved the highest level of professional excellence as demonstrated by: 1. At least two years of mental health counseling experience (either full time or the equivalent to full time). 2. Recent experience using electronic mental health records charting. 3. Demonstrated ability to present to large groups and to create and facilitate workshops. 4. Experience with planning and coordinating events. 5. Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development. 6. Desire to work collaboratively in a holistic environment; ability to multi-task, work with interruptions, and exhibit flexibility. 7. Demonstrated commitment to the community college mission of providing services to students of diverse abilities, interests, and cultural backgrounds. 8. Bilingual (English and Spanish or Japanese). 9. Ability to contribute to the mission of the college.
