Lecturer Positions in Small Animal Internal Medicine and Hemodialysis

The Department of Clinical Studies, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, is seeking applications for two lecturer positions in small animal internal medicine and hemodialysis. The positions are ideally suited for recent graduates of an internal medicine residency program or for others seeking to transition into an academic career. Demonstrated experience in hemodialysis is required. The successful candidate will spend 9 months of the academic year providing clinical service in the small animal hospital. Two months of protected academic time for board exam study or research endeavors, and one-month vacation time will complete the academic year. The lectureship will be a one-year, potentially renewable appointment, optimally starting in July 2017.
The position primarily involves clinical service and teaching in a busy university teaching hospital. Clinical service responsibilities will include provision of patient care and supervision of day-to-day operations of the internal medicine service, including hemodialysis. Teaching responsibilities will include small group and didactic instruction of veterinary students rotating through the service and mentoring of internal medicine residents. In addition to student rounds and separate clinician rounds, the medicine section holds two different weekly journal clubs, board review lectures, and chalk talks. The different sections of the hospital offer additional academic rounds. The proximity of the Veterinary School to the Medical School fosters numerous collaborative research and clinical endeavors. Opportunity exists to participate in collaborative research projects within and outside the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Section of Medicine employs seven ( ACVIM / ECVIM -Small Animal Internal Medicine) board-certified internists in support of the program. There are currently 11 residents enrolled in the residency-training program. More than 30 Diplomates of multiple American certifying Colleges, who are leaders in their fields, support the Section of Medicine. The hospital is a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment with an excellent nursing staff and residents. Candidates must have a veterinary degree, and must either be a Diplomate of the American or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Specialty of Small Animal Internal Medicine or be eligible to sit for their certifying board examination in 2017.
