Associate University Librarian

Position Description:

The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Rod Library seeks a collaborative, visionary individual to serve as Associate University Librarian, Learning and Research. This new position will provide leadership and strategic direction for the library's Learning and Research Division including information literacy instruction, outreach, reference, liaison program, Learning Commons, and the library's unique resource collections: Fine and Performing Arts, UNI Museum, Special Collections and University Archives, Instructional Resources & Technology Services (curriculum library), and Youth. The division consists of 21 faculty and staff. Rod Library recently completed a strategic planning and re-envisioning process that emphasizes the library's integral role in student learning and success. Rod Library seeks to become the best comprehensive university library in the country. To achieve this vision, the library brought diverse services together to create three new divisions: Content Discovery, Learning and Research, and Administration and Planning. The library seeks a new leader to join a team of dedicated, service-oriented professionals who develop distinct instructional roles of collections and spaces, particularly the marquee collections listed above. This is a full-time tenured administrative faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, assuming a longstanding record of significant librarianship, scholarship, and service, including a second graduate or advanced degree. The successful candidate's record must demonstrate professional accomplishments which warrant this appointment.

Education Requirements:

ALA-accredited master's degree in library, information science or international equivalent required.

Required Qualifications:

Additional requirements include minimum of five years of increasingly responsible, substantive positions relating to public services, archives, and/or museums; minimum of three years of experience managing or supervising librarians and/or staff including supervisory experience in an academic library; evidence of competence in strategic planning and collaborative decision-making in rapidly changing environments; demonstrated skills in leadership, oral and written communication, and creative problem-solving; demonstrated ability to foster environment of collegiality, respect, trust and teamwork; record suitable for appointment at Associate Professor rank or higher, including having previously been granted tenure; and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of trends in public services, information literacy, and outreach.

Desirable Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of trends in museums, archives, special collections, fine & performing arts librarianship, and/or youth services librarianship; demonstrated experience in effectively implementing new technologies to improve services; second graduate or other advanced degree; experience with assessment and data-driven decision making; demonstrated commitment to and support for diversity and inclusion; and experience supervising faculty librarians in an academic library.
