Assistant Director of Advancement Communication

The Assistant Director supports the marketing and communications efforts for the Office of Advancement, specializing in, but not limited to, online communications and social media.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Point person for Advancement electronic communications and the software that supports that communication (not including Raiser’s Edge).
  • Works with the Annual Fund, Alumni/Alumnae Relations and Leadership Giving supporting communications projects as well as offices outside of Advancement who need our support in communicating with their constituencies.
  • In collaboration with supervisor, establishes both broad and specific goals and standards for communications implementation, especially electronic communications.
  • Monitors and analyzes email delivery, open rates, click through rates and makes recommendations for improved efficiencies and effectiveness in use of electronic communications tools.
  • Reinforces the “You + 2” rule before any email is sent to a wide constituent group. Assistant Director and one other “power user” will have ability to send instant emails.
  • Provides ongoing training, updates and consultation to Advancement staff to ensure knowledge in the use of communications tools and to encourage the use of established standards in all electronic communications for the Office of Advancement.
  • Works with supervisor and webmaster to design, update, maintain and enhance the department’s web pages in line with Advancement communications goals.
  • Manages the Office of Advancement communications calendar and holds regular meetings with Advancement colleagues to ensure appropriate timing and messaging to various constituencies.
  • Takes the lead in evaluating software products and processes so that the Office of Advancement is best served in its electronic communications needs. Makes recommendations for outside consultation and internal support from IT regarding needs assessment, product analysis, testing and recommendations for lease or purchase.
  • For large programs, when necessary, provides reporting support for both on-campus and off-campus events hosted by the Office of Advancement.
  • When appropriate, outlines the need for student workers and/or student interns and supervises their work on projects including social media maintenance, data maintenance, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with Information Technology and Communications staff to ensure compliance with online standards while maintaining consistent institutional vision and goals.
  • Participates in Reunion Weekend, Homecoming and Family Weekend and other events as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This individual has a bachelor's degree with course work, training and/or work experience related to information systems, communications and marketing, electronic media and web development. Preference is given to those who have a minimum of 1-3 years performing a similar role and higher education or nonprofit experience is helpful but not required. Must have an understanding and demonstrated competence in web-based technologies, ideally including knowledge of HTML. She/he has strong organizational, writing, and communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting firm deadlines. Must have an understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse HWS constituency, and an ability to channel constituent engagement though electronic media. Curiosity, creativity and an ability to collaborate are highly desired.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative salaried position. Normal campus office hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours. Some evening and weekend work will be required. The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This position is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
