Library Specialist

Job Description:

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

$15.09/ per hour

The Library Specialist is responsible for supporting the Library by assisting patrons in utilizing resources; assisting Librarians to acquire, prepare and organize resources.

Job Responsibilities: Participate in maintaining library databases by entering, reconciling, updating, and correcting bibliographic records; entering and revising online data files as necessary. Provide intellectual access to library materials by applying local bibliographic standards and database policies to Library of Congress-produced MARC records for newly acquired materials. Process and maintain library materials conforming to local requirements and standards, primarily printing and applying spine labels for books. Perform minor repairs to library materials. Maintains historical reference of resources by keeping records of items purchased or obtained prices, delivery and shipping and product acceptability. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications. Contribute to team effort, working with current staff and possibly student assistants to accomplish routine duties and participate in special projects. May require some night and/or weekend hours.

Clerical test must be taken and satisfactory scores must be made. Typing score must be 40 WPM with 98% accuracy; data entry score must be 4000 KPH with 98% accuracy; basic skills score must be 70%. Required Education and Experience:

• Associates degree of equivalent in experience.

• 1 year of basic office experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Library experience, particularly cataloging; familiarity with Microsoft Office and/or library-specific software.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of basic customer service techniques.

• Knowledge of software navigation techniques.

• Knowledge of verifying techniques.

• Knowledge of keyboarding skills.

• Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.

• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.

• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.

• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.

• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.

• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.

• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
