International Student Advisor


Title: International Student Advisor

Department: International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSSO)

Primary Function:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director (PDSO/RO) the International Student Advisor (ISA) is primarily responsible for advising and assisting international students and scholars with all immigration and visa matters and management of the office. The ISA serves as a university "Designated School Official" (DSO) for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and "Alternate Responsible Officer" (ARO) for the U.S. Department of State's J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.

Responsibilities:
  • Act as a DSO for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and as an ARO for the U.S. Department of State.
  • Advise international students, scholars, dependents and university affiliates on immigration related matters, related-support services, cross-cultural communication, and community engagement.
  • Assist with the financial evaluation for the issuance of Forms 1-20 and DS-2019 to all new and continuing students.
  • Track both F-1 and J-1 student enrollment in order to register these students in SEVIS within 30 days of the start of each semester.
  • Demonstrate through knowledge of federal regulations affecting students and scholars in both F-1 and J-1 visa classifications, with an ability to relay this information clearly and effectively to high-level university leadership, academic affairs administrators and Deans.
  • Process applications for submission to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, i.e. Optional Practical Training (OPT), STEM OPT extensions, Reinstatement, Change of Status, etc.
  • Interface with all relevant government agencies, including, yet not limited to the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, U.S.Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, and Department of Transportation, as needed.
  • Assist in the monitoring of SEVIS alerts.
  • Help develop and conduct immigration programs/workshops that will meet student's needs.
  • Assist with management of office data, records and reports.
  • Prepare certifications of enrollment, visa renewal letters, etc.
  • Keep up-to-date on developments in the international education field including immigration legislation, interpretation, best practices and trends.
  • Represent the ISSSO, in conjunction with the Assistant Director, on campus-wide committees, meetings, initiatives and assistant with projects, programs, tasks and initiatives, as assigned.
  • Maintain record and files, order handouts and order office supplies to maintain stock.
  • Open and distribute mail.
  • Manage daily appointments.
  • Assist with new international student orientation.
  • Update and maintain office information in both printed and web materials.
  • Check and respond to office e-mail and phone messages.
  • Assist with supervising and training student workers.
  • Evaluate I-20 and DS-2019 applications and issue forms I-20 and DS-2019 to new and continuing students.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in International Education, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or Student Affairs preferred.
  • Minimum of one year experience in international student services/advising. Must be proficient in using SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). Knowledge in batching programs preferred (particularly Ellucian ISSM). Must be comfortable presenting to large groups.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident in order to be a DSO for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or ARO for the U.S. Department of State (DOS).
