DENTAL - VICE DEAN

Job Description: The Office of the Vice Dean of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University is responsible for facilitating and increasing collaboration in the core activities of the school.

The Vice Dean works closely with the academic departments, administrative units and residency programs in fostering collaboration and teamwork in achieving the mission of the school.

The Vice Dean also works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and local/regional health care agencies to provide information and services related to the School of Dental Medicine.

The Vice Dean has significant administrative responsibilities in formulating, interpreting, and implementing institutional policy for the ECU SoDM. In addition, the Vice Dean has significant substantial independence of administrative authority and discretion in all areas of responsibility.

The Vice Dean serves as the second officer of the School, supporting the Dean in all activities. In the absence of the Dean, the Vice Dean serves in the role of the Dean and as the Dean's principal representative in meetings and functions as appropriate.

The overarching goal of the role of the Vice Dean is to support the work of the Dean in achieving success in all School programs.

The Vice Dean will hold academic rank in the Department of the individual's discipline.

Specific Duties include, but are not limited to:

The Vice Dean serves as a resource to department chairs and associate and assistant deans who report to the Dean, and provides coordination among departments and administrative units.

The Vice Dean reviews and advises the Dean on appropriate SoDM policy development, implementation, and interpretation for those policies and procedures that are not specifically assigned to other associate or assistant deans.

The Vice Dean coordinates among other associate and assistant deans to ensure consistency and collaboration.

The Vice Dean serves as an ex-officio, non-voting member on all appropriate School committees and boards.

The Vice Dean is authorized to make decisions on operational issues for the Dean and has delegated signature authority.

The Vice Dean serves as a resource to SoDM alumni and their relationship to the School and its mission.

The Vice Dean supports increasing diversity in all SoDM populations including students, residents, staff and faculty while embracing a culture of respect and tolerance for diversity and developing leaders who are reflective of the communities we serve.

The Vice Dean participates in programs and activities of local, state and national organizations commensurate with his/her role at the School, including the American Dental Education Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, the Old North State Dental Society, and other professional associations.

The Vice Dean responds to requests for institutional data from the university and external constituencies.

The Vice Dean provides administrative oversight for the following areas:

Management of facilities with the Director of Facilities reporting to the position.

SoDM Office of Compliance, with the Compliance Specialist reporting to this position.

Human resources, with the HR Manager reporting to this position.

The Vice Dean performs other duties as assigned by the Dean.


Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree, DDS/DMD, or (PhD, JD) if appropriate academic and administrative experience.

Five years experience in progressively responsible administrative and leadership positions, including direction of academic programs, and demonstrated success in fostering teamwork in managing and leading a complex and/or developing organization.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, leaders, and staffs at all levels.

Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Demonstrated commitment to both a community-based and a generalist model of dental education.

Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina if doctoral degree is DDS/DMD.
