Job Summary:
The Dean of Students directs the day-to-day operations of the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs. This individual leads the Associate and Assistant Deans of Student Affairs and the Advisor to the Judicial Board as well as the Directors of the Counseling Service, Health Services, and Title IX and Compliance as an interconnected team that is focused on supporting and challenging students so they can reach their full academic, personal, and professional potential at Bowdoin and beyond. (Associated programs include, among others, new student Orientation, Pre-Major Academic Advising, Title IX, accommodations for students with disabilities, the Community Host Program, and student health and wellness initiatives.) The Dean also leads the team in the management of student crises as they arise. The Dean of Students oversees the Judicial Board and the Student Sexual Misconduct Board and the associated resolution processes and chairs and serves on a number of College committees. S/he is responsible for the oversight of the departmental budget, and serves as a member of the Dean's on-call rotation. Regular evening and weekend work is also required when the College is in session to manage workload and attend meetings and College functions. The Dean of Students also serves as the leader of the Division of Student Affairs when the Dean of Student Affairs is unavailable to do so.

Education/Skills Requirements:
A Masters degree is required; knowledge of or experience with a diverse residential, liberal arts college is preferred. The successful candidate will be an extremely hard worker who enjoys a fast-paced, unpredictable work environment centered on students where the needs and priorities are shifting from moment to moment. Must possess excellent judgment; demonstrated sensitivity, imagination, and effectiveness in responding to challenging student, personnel and college community issues; proven leadership ability, including the ability to recruit and develop an outstanding and diverse staff and lead a team in a demanding office environment; the ability to work independently and as part of a team and to develop and maintain productive, collegial working relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni; excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; the ability to be collaborative and solution-oriented; and the ability to maintain an appreciation for the diverse needs of all members of the campus community. Must be unflappable not easily rattled, offended, or upset, exceptionally well organized, and possess superb management and administrative skills. A sense of humor is required!

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents:
A minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience working with a diverse student population in an educational setting is required. Experience in supervision of administrative staff, budget management, and team building is also required.

Standard Work Days and Hours:
Generally M-F, 8:30 5:00 pm but regular evening and weekend work required for workload management, meetings, College functions and to serve as part of the Deans on-call rotation (also being available to Deans staff when they are on-call). This position is a year-round position (.92 FTE) working eleven months each year with vacation and not scheduled to work time being taken during summer, winter and spring breaks.
