Assistant Director of Editorial Services

Job Description:

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary: Commensurate with experience and education

Job Summary : The Assistant Director of Editorial Services (Website Editor) is responsible for developing, writing, editing, and assigning editorial content, which includes but not limited to features and news items, blog posts, podcasts, videos and long-form stories for the university's magazines (both print and digital editions) and for other publications as assigned. This position also manages the TCU Magazine's website on a daily basis, including the back-issue archives. In addition, this position generates and gathers analytic measurement information for the TCU Magazine's website as well as analyzes and reports on the measurement results on a regular basis. The Assistant Director supports the Director of Editorial Services with implementing strategic editorial plans, policies and procedures and integrates efforts with the team's research editor.

Duties and Essential Job Functions :

Develops and writes stories (both long- and short-form) and other editorial content on deadline for print and digital for TCU Magazine, while always adhering to the highest standards of journalism ethics, editorial accuracy and the department's strategic imperatives. Plans, edits and assigns stories and other editorial content on deadline for TCU Magazine, for both print and its digital media operations, while always adhering to the highest standards of journalism ethics, editorial accuracy and the department's strategic imperatives. Updates and manages the day-to-day operations of the TCU Magazine's website and its back-issue story archives, which includes but not limited to uploading stories, blogs, photos, podcasts, videos, and other digital multimedia elements as well as generating specific web-only packages for distribution across digital media channels.

Generates and gathers digital analytical information on TCU Magazine's website and produce quarterly and annual reports on the measurement results, along with providing recommendations for enhancing SEO strategic goals and integrates efforts with the team's research editor. Collaborates with other digital producers and content strategists in Editorial Services, the division and the university to further enhance best practices in the delivery of editorial content and other assets. Assists with the planning of the long-range editorial content calendar for TCU Magazine and its digital media operations, while always adhering to the division's strategic imperatives.

Copyedits and proofreads non-Editorial Services-originated content as assigned, checking for errors in AP style, errors of fact, grammar and spelling as well as clarity, focus and organization, while always adhering to the highest standards of journalism ethics and accuracy. Assists the Director of Editorial Services with developing and implementing strategic editorial content plans, policies and procedures. Contributes to the overall success of Editorial Services by producing creative ideas that enhance the team and the communications division. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, media studies or related field or equivalent in experience.
  • Five-plus years of experience in writing and editing news and feature stories, especially in long-form journalism and writing for web, with a proven track record of producing high-impact and accurate editorial content in a deadline-driven environment at either a daily newspaper or general-interest magazine.


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Advanced degree.
  • Assignment editing experience.
  • Proficiency with WordPress.
  • Experience using digital analytic tools to produce reports for SEO purposes.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of AP style and the standards of journalism ethics and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of a university magazine and the role it plays supporting the brand of the university.
  • Knowledge of project management techniques with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of electronic media, its impact on printed publications.
  • Knowledge of working on Macintosh computers using Creative Adobe Suite.
  • Skill in writing and the ability to edit.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in the supervision of freelancers and student interns.
  • Ability to work with key administrators, internal staff writers, designers, editors, photographers and printers.
  • Ability to manage editorial projects with efficiency in a deadline-driven work environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate as a team member.


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
