DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AND PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT - Search Extended

The University of Illinois Foundation has an immediate opening for the Director of Research and Portfolio Management. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Innovation, the Director will play a key role in identifying donors with the greatest capacity to give, effectively focusing the efforts of the front-line fundraising staff within the University of Illinois system, and in building a best-in-class prospect research program.

Responsibilities include leading and managing all aspects of the Research office; developing and managing procedures for systematically evaluating sources of private support from individuals, foundations, and corporations; overall management of prospect identification and portfolio development; overseeing the prospect rating and assignment process; investigation, assessment, and implementation of new technologies and vended products to assist in research and pipeline development and management; and collaboration and coordination with development staff at the University System and the Foundation.

The Director oversees a team of 20+ portfolio information managers, research specialists, analysts, and administrative professionals. A portion of the team serves as liaisons to unit-based gift officers, developing and optimizing portfolios, referring prospects, assisting with trip planning, and helping to identify relevant cultivation, qualification, solicitation and stewardship strategies for prospects in those portfolios, while others broadly and strategically supplement wealth, engagement, philanthropic activity, and other relevant data in the advancement database and conduct prospecting for cross-cutting focus areas like corporations and foundations, planned giving, interdisciplinary research, international development, and principal gifts. The team is also responsible for developing documents and platforms to brief key academic, administrative, and development leadership; working closely with the Foundation’s analytics division; and managing the business and system processes and data related to portfolios and the pipeline.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in Information Science, Library Science, or Business preferred; 7+ years’ experience in business development, marketing, sales, or fundraising; strong working knowledge of higher education; experience in complex, matrixed organizations; 5+ years of supervisory experience, preferably with teams of 10 or more; ability to quickly comprehend, explain, and operationalize complex data sets and analyses, to appropriately manage and communicate sensitive information, and to foster a collaborative work environment; understanding of wealth and biographical indicators and portfolio management processes from information discovery to compilation and sharing, through referrals, and to transfers of portfolios, and retirement of prospects; demonstrated leadership and coaching skills through cultural, business, and technological changes; experience with relational database products, data structures and reporting.

Preferred candidate will be a results-driven, fast learner who is self-motivated, can concurrently manage and prioritize multiple projects, and who brings experience from a variety of functional areas across an enterprise.
