Position Summary:

We are seeking a full-time Assistant Director to coordinate the day-to-day functions of the newly established Center for Research on College to Workforce Transitions (CCWT). This person will be responsible for implementing the goals of the Center, specifically:

(1) Identify and strengthen, via research and policy analysis, the programs and policies that contribute to effective support systems (i.e., teaching, training, and career and academic advising) that facilitate students' transitions from college to the workforce;
(2) Foster a community of scholars and practitioners via strategic collaborations on research and policy analysis;
(3) Support a cohort of researchers engaged in college-to-workforce pathway issues through the operation of a small grants program;
(4) Facilitate debate and dialogue around issues facing the future of higher education and the labor market though symposia and conferences that bring together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners from different fields; and,
(5) Communicate findings and results from these activities via policy reports, journal articles, social media, and other outlets to the general public and scholarly, policymaking, and practitioner audiences.

Additional Information:

The mission of the Center for Research on College to Workforce Transitions (CCWT) is to conduct and support research, critical policy analysis, and public dialogue on student experiences with the transition from college to the workforce in order to inform policies, programs, and practices that promote academic and career success for all learners.

The Institute is being launched at a time when student employability, skills gaps, changes in the labor market, the future of higher education, and career pathways are being discussed and debated around the world. Yet absent from these discussions are the voices and experiences of those most implicated in the future direction of higher education-workforce dynamics: those of the learners themselves. Documenting their experiences with teaching and training, career advising, and hiring processes is important to inform the design and improvement of programs aimed at helping students make the transition from college to the workforce. In fact, ensuring that new programs, policies, and practices are grounded in the experiences of "users", and the organizational, socio-cultural, and political factors influencing them, is a core concept of design, public health, and other fields aimed at creating products and services that best meet the needs of potential users - here, both "traditional" (i.e., 18-25 years old) as well as "non-traditional" (i.e., adults, dislocated workers) students enrolled in some form of postsecondary education or training program.

Besides documenting the experiences of students making the college-to-workforce transition, research and policy analysis conducted under the auspices of CCWT will also focus on identifying effective strategies for teaching, advising, hiring, and training that facilitate student and employee acquisition of 21st century competencies, career decision-making skills, and favorable employment outcomes. In addition, research will also focus on comparative analyses of student experiences with college-workforce pathways across municipal, regional and national borders that shed light on promising practices and important differences.
