Job Description:

Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide counseling services to adult/continuing education students from diverse backgrounds regarding academic and vocational education planning, career planning, goals clarification and personal life management.

Provide counseling and guidance to support the personal and academic development of a diverse student population through careful listening, appropriate referrals and supportive feedback.

Develop and present workshops, provide orientation for new students.

Collaborate with college credit counselors for articulation and matriculation of noncredit students to credit programs and courses.

Interpret assessment instruments as basis for formulating student educational plans.

Travel to designated SCE campuses as needed to serve students enrolled in academic programs and courses.

Conduct outreach activities as needed. Assist with vocational program employment activities such as job fairs and workshops.

Assist with the graduation application process utilizing electronic student educational plans and help with follow-up services designed to support student success.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on division, college and district committees as necessary, participate in appropriate professional development activities. Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of counseling techniques and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (eg., computer software applications, degree audit system) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling.

OR

A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

OR

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

Desirable Qualifications:
Knowledge and competency in theory and principles of counseling, career/vocational counseling, assessment, educational psychology and learning theory.

Experience planning, coordinating, and presenting student workshops and/or teaching.

Experience in community outreach and work with community agencies, schools, and government entities.

Experience working with Basic Skills, English-as-a-Second Language and/or vocational student populations.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Experience with electronic student education plans, student information systems or scheduling software.

The equivalent of two (2) years recent, post-Masters degree counseling experience in a community college, adult education, or high school setting.

Established in 1930, the North Orange County Community College Districts School of Continuing Education (SCE) is the fourth largest community college-based continuing education institution in California. Students enroll in SCEs noncredit programs to enhance basic skills and employable skills and/or prepare for credit courses, living independently, and civic participation. Noncredit programs offered at SCE include adult basic skills (high school diploma and literacy programs), English as a second language, U.S. citizenship, parenting, older adults, short-term vocational, and programs for adults with disabilities. In addition, SCE offers a wide selection of community services courses for a small tuition fee including Kids College and Teen Program, fitness, fine arts, home decorative arts, business skills, and financial planning.

Open to all community members interested in making positive changes in their lives, the majority of SCE classes are state-supported. Over 800 courses are taught each quarterly term, serving 35,000 students annually ranging from preschoolers to seniors. SCE students, staff, and faculty represent more than 24 different ethnic groups. In 2014/15, SCE issued 275 high school diplomas and 418 short-term vocational career certificates. SCE has three center locations in Anaheim, Cypress, and Wilshire (Fullerton) as well as over 100 off-site community locations in partnership with local education agencies and municipalities. SCEs Student Success and Support Program provides orientation, assessment, and counseling components while also offering workshops to support students in the area of college transition, financial aid basics, career exploration, resume development, and interviewing techniques.
