Faculty, Barrett, the Honors College Downtown Phx

Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix Campus invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. The faculty members of Barrett are non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers with competitive salaries and generous benefits; most are on three-year renewable appointments. The main teaching responsibility rests on a rigorous two-semester interdisciplinary seminar, The Human Event, in which students examine important ideas from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty members teach upper-division seminars, and mentor honors students throughout their four years in independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other scholarly endeavors including study abroad.

Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriched academic experience that challenges them and enables them to become better global citizens. Typical Barrett first-year students were in the top five percent of their high school class.

We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position with primary responsibility to teach the first-year Human Event seminar at the ASU Downtown Campus, located in the center of dynamic and culturally vibrant Phoenix. Successful applicants will demonstrate experience in and openness to teaching primary sources through multiple theoretical/disciplinary/methodological approaches, across different cultures and historical eras. Applicants should have a passion for teaching in an interdisciplinary environment, as our students’ majors span the Downtown Campus colleges of Nursing and Health Innovation, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Health Solutions, Integrative Sciences and Arts, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, and Public Service and Community Solutions. The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law is also housed on the Downtown Campus. For more information on the ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus, see http://www.asu.edu/downtownphoenix/ . The position begins August 2017; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.

Qualifications: Required: (1) A PhD by June 2017 in any academic field, and (2) experience teaching undergraduate argumentative writing and leading seminar-based discussions.

Desired: Candidates whose work integrates views from multiple disciplines and who have experience in honors education are encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from candidates whose teaching and scholarly activities address the diversity of our downtown student population.

Diversity is a key component of excellence at ASU, and Barrett supports the value of diversity among faculty, staff, and students.

Application: Please send: (1) a letter of application detailing teaching philosophy and experience, disciplinary training and research, and how you can contribute to honors education; (2) a C.V.; (3) two confidential letters of recommendation that address the extent and quality of your teaching with explanation of metric and other relevant context; (4) course evaluations from your most recent two semesters of teaching, and (5) a brief description of course objectives and themes you would adopt in The Human Event (HON171 and HON272), and a schedule of readings for those two courses. Information on The Human Event can be found at https://barretthonors.asu.edu/academics/honors-courses-and-contracts/signature-courses/human-event and sample syllabi are available at https://barretthonors.asu.edu/honors-faculty .
