Position Summary

The Art History Division of the Bowdoin College Department of Art invites applications for a one-year Mellon postdoctoral fellowship in American Art History before 1945 to begin July 1, 2017. Fellows are expected to teach three courses and participate in the life of the department. Applications are especially welcome from scholars with innovative approaches to American art. The successful applicant's teaching responsibilities will include a mid-level lecture course and an upper-level seminar that respond to the candidate's area of expertise, with possible participation in the department's team-taught introductory course. Bowdoin's faculty frequently make use of the collections and exhibitions in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, whose encyclopedic holdings include examples of American painting and decorative arts.
Applicants for this fellowship must have completed their Ph.D. no earlier than January 1, 2014. Candidates who expect to receive their Ph.D. by June 30, 2017 should provide documentation from their home institution confirming this schedule. Applicants must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research, and a commitment to the liberal arts.
The fellowship carries a stipend of $50,000 plus benefits. In addition, the position carries a $4,000 research and travel fund plus support to attend professional conferences.
