Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Division of University Relations is hiring a Major Gift Officer for California. This employee will work and live in California.

The Major Gift Officer ( MGO ) is part of a team of Regional major gift officers in University Relations and he/she will report to the Director of Development, West Region (DoD). The MGO is responsible for securing major gifts from alumni and non-alumni friends in California and secondarily, the Northwest region. He/she is engaged in all phases of development (identification, discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship) with a strong focus on soliciting gifts of $50,000 and above. Being an experienced professional, the MGO works with the DoD to develop outreach, pipeline building and strategic engagement activities and next steps for regional major gift donors and prospects. Discovery and pipeline building will also be a part of the MGO's responsibilities.

The MGO manages a portfolio of approximately120 major gift prospects and works collaboratively with, and in support of volunteers, development colleagues, alumni relations staff, and other University representatives to raise financial support for school, college, program, and university-wide priorities. He/she stays abreast of prospect contacts and activities in the region by development colleagues to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations. The MGO recommends programming and events in the region and helps to facilitate when necessary.

The MGO is a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing five and six-figure gifts. He/she is expected to act with a high degree of independence. Local and national travel is essential, and the Major Gift Officer is expected to be visiting prospects at least 60% of the time. He/she will travel to the UMD campus quarterly and keep in close contact with other partners across campus.

Candidates familiar with and experience working in California markets are preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor's degree required

Experience:
Must have at least 4 years of successful development experience; a proven record of working effectively with volunteers and high level donors; building donor relationships; and soliciting and closing five and six figure gifts

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to make cold calls as well as to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to manage more than one project simultaneously
Demonstrated record of meeting deadlines
Highly energetic, creative, and an experienced professional with a proven track record of building excellent donor relationships and closing five+ figure gifts Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with campus leaders, volunteers, and other fundraising professionals
Ability to work well with diverse groups of constituents/colleagues and must have a proven track record of being able to work independently and with little direct supervision
Excellent writing and oral communication and critical thinking skills are essential
Must be able to manage a demanding travel schedule (at least 60% of time)

Preferences:

Familiarity with higher education fundraising and experience in a public research university is preferred.

Candidates familiar with and experience working in California/West Coast markets are preferred.
