Physical Therapist Educator

The position of Physical Therapist Educator is an integral component of the University of Delaware Physical Therapy Clinic and the Department of Physical Therapy. Under general direction of the Department Chair and the Director of Clinical Services, the Physical Therapist Educator will perform four key functions: (1) participate in the direct clinical care of patients and supervise Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students during patient care; (2) support academic endeavors and provide teaching assistance; (3) support research activities as needed; and (4) administer projects including course support and clinical and research protocols.

The Physical Therapist Expert is an experienced professional who functions independently to address identified academic, research and clinical needs and provides expert advice and consultation to departmental and clinical staff. The Physical Therapist Educator communicates effectively within the department regarding clinical, academic, administrative and research components and participates in departmental team and committee work. In addition, the Physical Therapy Educator communicates with the faculty of other physical therapy institutions on issues of clinical education and specialty area development.

Major Responsibilities:
  1. Participates in direct patient care in a clinic within the University of Delaware Physical Therapy Clinical Services system. Evaluates and plans physical therapy program for patients requiring physical therapy. This includes evaluation of specific deficits and the administration of appropriate physical agents, exercise, and physical therapy techniques.
  2. Clinical mentoring of DPT students, residents and trainees. Directs physical therapy students in the evaluation and treatment of patients. Provides supervised learning and clinical application of physical therapy principles and procedures.
  3. Directly supervises graduate and undergraduate students in the operation of all clinical activities.
  1. Participates in direct teaching assistant duties within the DPT program. Establishes and implements laboratory instruction and assists in the assessment of student performance in practical settings, written assignments and examinations. Provides lecture support in areas of expertise as requested.
  2. Assists in the administration of course material as well as course assignments.
  3. Communicates with other professionals in areas of clinical expertise, education, and research participation. Interacts with and educates other therapists in areas of academic support, clinical education and expertise at the local and/or national level.
  4. Participates in scholarly activities such as protocol development and student assessment.
  5. Contributes to the research mission of the department through assignment to research support as a clinical researcher as assigned.
  6. Contributes to the academic and research mission of the department and clinic through community education and service.
  7. Oversees project development and implementation.
  8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Requires a Master's Degree or higher in Physical Therapy with 2 years of clinical experience including clinical teaching (residency training will count as 2 years of experience if completed).
  • Eligible for licensure in Delaware. Depending on the clinic where the Physical Therapist Educator is delivering physical therapy services, board eligibility by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties is required in the following: Orthopedic or Sports Physical Therapy (for the Sports and Ortho Clinic); Neurology or Geriatric Physical Therapy (for the Neurologic and Older Adult Physical Therapy Clinic). Board certification is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and supervisory experience are required.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software including document preparation and presentation software is essential.
