BSOM - - DEAN AND SENIOR ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR

Job Description: The Brody School of Medicine has a three-fold mission established by the North Carolina State Assembly in 1974 that continues to serve as a guiding framework:

To increase the supply of primary care physicians to serve the state
To improve the health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina
To enhance the access of minority and disadvantaged students to a medical education.

As the senior academic leader of the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM), the Dean also holds the position of Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs in the Division of Health Sciences and is primary liaison to Vidant Health System and Vidant Medical Center for all matters relating to the School, clinical care, education, research, and the practice of medicine. As Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs (SAVC), the Dean is responsible for helping integrate patient care activities within the components of the Health Sciences Division and across the University.

The successful candidate will have a passion to develop, in collaboration with other key stakeholders, a high value clinically integrated delivery system to serve rural eastern North Carolina. The Dean, along with health system leaders, will be in a unique position to address the social determinants of health and health disparities in a large geographical, sparsely populated, economically challenged rural area.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Dean is responsible for planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic, clinical, and research programs of the clinical departments, basic science departments, the centers, and the academic support units of Brody School of Medicine. The Dean is responsible for curriculum, selection and promotion of students, and for maintaining the accreditation of the medical school and its programs. He/she represents the School at university-wide committees and councils when appropriate, including the Graduate Administrative Board, the Academic Council, and the Chancellor's Cabinet. The Dean is an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees of the Vidant Medical Center.

The Dean is also responsible for the preparation, recommendation, and supervision of the budgets for the School. The financial stability of the medical school is dependent on multiple factors, including the clinical revenues, state appropriations, extramural funding, philanthropy, and other sources. The Dean is the senior executive at the medical school for all externally funded research, internally funded investigations, clinical trials, and other forms of scholarship and works in concert with appropriate University officials that carry institutional authority to perform the duties of that position.

The Dean represents the School in appropriate groups and councils dealing with plans and policies for medical education on a statewide basis; these include appropriate individuals and groups at the UNC General Administration, the State of North Carolina Institute of Medicine, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the Area Health Education Center program for the State. At the national level, the Dean represents the School on appropriate committees and councils of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Medical Association, and other national organizations and agencies concerned with medical education.

After advice and consultation with appropriate faculty committees, the Dean reviews and recommends appointments, promotions, tenure, retentions, dismissals, and salary adjustments for faculty and administrative staff within the Brody School of Medicine. The Dean appoints committees in the School and is an ex-officio member of all committees.
