ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES

Job Description: The Assistant Director of the University Studies Program will serve the needs of the University Studies program alongside the Director and staff of the office. S/he will be responsible for administrative and degree program support and operate as a leadership role in the program as part administrator, advisor and instructor for program courses.

The University Studies' student embodies unique characteristics and activities that require intensive, high-touch advising (e.g. online, adult, readmit, high hours of completed work, undecided, military, etc.). These students must create an individualized degree program that is interdisciplinary and meets the demands of the curriculum proposal process. As a result, University Studies students need assistance navigating the undergraduate curriculum and building networks with constituents on and off campus.

The Assistant Director is involved in preparation of the Bachelor of Science in University Studies (BSUS) Student Degree Plan and Proposals, and the associated Faculty Oversight Committee (FOC) review processes. S/he will maintain comprehensive records on students enrolled in program, execute advisee reports, identify and resolve advising issues, work on retention and graduation efforts with campus partners, and assist the Director of the University Studies program in retention and recruitment related projects.

The Assistant Director advises students in developing an individualized major, assists students in major/career exploration, and assists with and provides guidance in course selection towards each individualized plan. S/he is the lead person responsible for reviewing curriculum for each student in the graduation audit process.

The Assistant Director develops, manages, and instructs sections of the BSUS gateway course, as well as serving as an active participant and supporter of the University Studies Faculty Oversight Committee throughout the year and during the proposal review process. This position participates in and represents the Degree Program and College in programming across campus, and is involved in university events including graduation.


Minimum Qualifications: A Masters degree in a closely related discipline such as counseling, education, communication, or psychology from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of three years of experience in academic advising in higher education. Qualifying degrees must be conferred by the time of hire.

This position requires a person with experience in academic advising and who understands major and career counseling at the collegiate level. In addition to working with students, the person in this position will interact with university administrators, faculty, and staff. Personal abilities required for this position include strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and customer service skills.
