The Student Diversity, Engagement and Success department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks an Academic Coordinator for the Upward Bound program.
This is a twelve-month position that reports to the Project Director of Upward Bound. Two key purposes of this position are to:
50% Develop and conduct high impact college preparatory programming, including academic and career advising to students in grades 9-12, as well as workshops through schools visits and campus activities.
50% Develop and manage Upward Bound Summer Enrichment Program.
- Bachelor’s Degree at time of hire
- Experience with college preparatory academic and career advising
- Experience coordinating academic and career programming for youth
- Experience working with diverse populations
- Degree in Education, Counseling, Communications, Project Management, or other related field
- Experience in the administration of projects that serve academically disadvantaged, low-income, and potential first-generation college students (such as TRIO programs)
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, as well as strong computer skills
- Experience with grant assessment and management
- Experience with curriculum development
- Background similar to participants
- Demonstrated ability to meet set goals

- Provide high quality academic and career advising to program participants in target schools throughout the academic year
- Develop collaborative relationships with K-12 teachers, counselors and administrators
- Recruit students for participation in Upward Bound activities
- Coordinate tutorial services for participants within their schools
- Assist with college applications, the FAFSA, and other college enrollment materials
- Maintain advising records within program data systems
- Monitor student achievement for student success and program goal attainment
- Understand and promote the dual enrollment process for program participants
- Develop and coordinate innovative workshops (Saturday Colleges and in-school)
- Provide programming in: academic skills development, career exploration, leadership skills, financial literacy, test preparation, and other PSE success topics
- Teach students to advocate for themselves as they prepare for, and enter, PSE
- Engage families in the educational process
- Coordinate reservations, transportation, meals, and invitations for events
- Attend and supervise Team Leaders (student employee support) at Saturday College events
- Coordinate and manage all aspects of the summer enrichment program
- Coordinate recruitment and application process for camp participants
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise camp staff and instructors
- Schedule camp activities, including classes, workshops, recreation, and cultural activities
- Oversee purchasing for summer programming including transportation, classroom supplies, and activities
- Work closely with Continuing Education to prepare for summer logistics
- Plan and chaperone regional college tour
- Make presentations to prospective students, enrolled students, families, K-12 staff, PSE faculty/staff regarding Upward Bound and related topics
- Represent Upward Bound at various campus and off campus functions at state, regional, and national, meetings as assigned by the Director
- Prepare budget requests for programming
- Assist with grant writing process
- Conduct evaluation and assessment of programs, including collecting providing data for annual reports
- Participate in professional develop opportunities
- Coordinate special projects as assigned
PreCollege Programs (PC) supports the mission and core values of the Office of Student Diversity, Engagement and Success (SDES) and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UW-W) by providing programs that enhance, engage, and support students in their pursuit of postsecondary education and beyond.
