Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree or Master's degree preferred, in human resources, business, or related field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Required:
At least three years of experience in human resources, seven for Senior prefix
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and human relations skills, knowledge and understanding of people management
competencies such as coaching, managing conflict, and communications. Establish and foster trust and mutual respect when relating to others.
Strong organizational skills.
Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and engagement in all areas of management and customer
service.
Knowledge of Federal and State employment laws and regulations.
Knowledge of human resources policies and procedures.
Ability to meet and deal effectively with people and maintain a good working
relationship with students, co-workers, faculty, staff, administration, and the public.

Preferred:
Experience working in a higher education environment.
University of Wisconsin System and UW-Madison policies and procedures knowledge.
Experience with PeopleSoft and HRIS systems.

Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a high volume diagnostic laboratory that provides a broad range of veterinary diagnostic testing services to approximately 2,500 clients. Laboratories are located both in Madison and in Barron.
This position is located in the Madison lab and performs a wide variety of human resources activities in the areas of recruitment, staffing, classification, compensation, performance evaluation, discipline, union contract interpretation, employment relations, and records management for a laboratory employing approximately 80 permanent/project staff and 15-20 LTEs/Students. The incumbent functions as an expert on state statutes and university policies governing human resources activities. This position also provides general support within the WVDL Administration Unit including business-related activity.

The employee in this position is expected to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with managers, supervisors, and staff. Effective and judicious professional communications, workplace sensitivity and diplomacy are essential. Position responsibilities require the exercise of individual initiative, good judgment and discretion. Work is performed under general supervision of the Director.
